Background: “The FY1 Toolkit” is a teaching programme designed for Foundation Year 1 doctors (FY1s) in South-East Scotland. The aim was to focus on key skills required as an FY1, delivered by FY2s. The programme has received endorsement by the Medical Education Directorate of NHS Lothian and ran over two years with a quality improvement (QI) intervention at the halfway point.
Methods: A curriculum gap was identified through an audit of FY1 experience. Data collection included tracking attendance and gathering learner feedback. The first cycle, from August to November 2023, involved weekly sessions via a hybrid model. Based on attendance and learner feedback, interventions included promotion via online platforms, shift to a fully online delivery, and reduced session frequency to increase accessibility. The second cycle, from July to October 2024, delivered fortnightly sessions entirely online.
Outcomes: Initial sign-ups increased by 85%, from 131in the first cycle to 243 in the second. Average attendance increased by 230%, from 10 to 33. Perceived helpfulness remained consistent. Perceived confidence levels increased pre- to post-session, with similar patterns in both cycles. Qualitative feedback was positive.
Conclusion: The FY1 Toolkit has been impactful. Following our intervention, sign-ups and attendance rates increased, showing that online-only delivery may be a favourable approach. The near-peer approach provides a forum to ask questions to those with recent awareness of challenges faced by new FY1s. This complements their clinical training with practical and emotional support tools.
