Background: Sedation remains an important and useful anaesthetic procedure in clinical practice especially in medical or surgical procedures, it provides a state of calmness and help patient to relieve anxiety during procedures, Different studies done still the gaps exist.
Objective: To assess sedation-related adverse events and associated factors among patients undergoing gastrointestinal endoscopy at Muhimbili National Hospital, Dar es Salaam
Methodology: This study is an analytical cross-sectional study based in our hospital, across all age group and sex, candidates who received sedation for GI endoscopy procedure during the study period were enrolled into a study.
Results: A total of 272 patients enrolled into this study, this study observed 61% of the incidence of adverse events associated with sedation. Patients who had longer duration of procedure > 1 hour had also significantly higher proportion of adverse events (78.8%) compared to those who had short duration of procedure (55.1%). On analysis, young age <5 years, presence of comorbidities, upper respiratory tract infection, use of adjunct drugs, duration of procedure, monitoring equipment used were the factors associated.
Conclusion: This study observed a high cumulative incidence of adverse events associated with sedation. Training of the health care workers on safe sedation practice so as to improve their practices as the nurse anaesthetics were the main workers who were giving sedation. My recommendation is the specialist to work and supervise in that area, to minimise the adverse event following sedation.
