Objectives: To determine the awareness, contraceptive usage and factors associated with contraceptive uptake among women with Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) in ABUTH Zaria.
Methodology: A cross-sectional descriptive study among 153 women with SCD who presented to the outpatient clinics of the Haematology and Obstetrics and Gynaecology department of the Hospital. The women were conveniently sampled aver a two-month period and an interviewer-administered structured questionnaire was used to collect relevant information.
Results: The mean age and standard deviation of the respondents were 26.6±7.4 years. About half (51.3%) were still/ever married, 35.3% had tertiary education and 38.5% were parous. The majority (87.6%) were aware of contraception but only 34.6% learnt about it from healthcare workers and 21.6% were aware of emergency contraceptive methods. Only 23.5% had ever used contraceptives of which 82.6% had used only modern methods. The commonest modern contraceptive used was the long-acting reversible contraceptives (41.4%). Older age, being ever married and having a prior delivery increased the odds of using contraception (0R 3.7 CI 1.4-9.6; OR 7.7 CI 2.9-19.9; OR 6.6 CI 2.8-15.2 respectively). Marital status and parity were associated with contraceptive uptake (p<0.0001). The common barriers to non-use of contraceptives were desire for more children (48.3%) and fear of complications (34.5%).
Conclusion: The high awareness of contraception among women with SCD does not translate to adequate contraceptive usage. Comprehensive contraceptive counselling is needed to overcome barriers to contraceptive uptake in these high-risk women.
