Introduction: Global health education in anesthesiology improves clinical skills, cultural sensitivity, and addresses disparities. In 2018, Stanford’s Department of Anesthesiology launched the Global Health Equity (GHE) trainee pathway to develop future advocates in global anesthesia, prepare trainees to work in different resource settings, and engage them in bidirectional partnerships to overcome global disparities in patient care.
Aim: To evaluate the GHE pathway’s impact on global health engagement and career development and qualify opportunities for curriculum improvement.
Methods: This mixed-methods study (June 2024–July 2025) included residency and fellowship applicants, current trainees (residents and fellows), and alumni. Data were collected via REDCap surveys and interviews, transcribed and coded using NVivo. Ethical approval was obtained from Stanford IRB.
Results: Of 453 contacted, 56 responded (41 applicants, 12 residents, 3 fellows). Five of 15 alumni were interviewed. Ninety-eight percent of applicants believed global health experience would benefit their careers. Participants emphasized early exposure as key to long-term engagement. Graduates remained engaged in global health. Key themes included cultural humility, mentorship, sustainability, and capacity-building.
Conclusion: Longitudinal curricula like Stanford’s GHE pathway foster commitment to global anesthesia careers. A pathway exit interview was implemented as a follow-up sustainability plan to the surveys. Trainees suggested improvements including stronger partnerships and hands-on workshops. Next steps include testing identified intervention opportunities of incorporating small group breakout discussions by class to accompany monthly lectures.
